Nokia Networks is a multinational telecommunications company. The company was founded in 2007 as Nokia Siemens Networks BV and was a joint venture between the Finnish Nokia Oyj and the German Siemens AG . On April 1, 2007, Siemens Networks was merged with Nokia Networks Business . This created the second largest company for mobile communications based on added pro forma sales - and the fourth largest for fixed network infrastructure. Nokia Siemens Networks said it had around 60,000 employees worldwide at the time it was founded. On July 1, 2013, Siemens announced that Nokia would buy the Siemens stake in the company for 1.7 billion euros and would henceforth be the sole owner. After the acquisition, the company was renamed Nokia Solutions and Networks . In April 2014 Nokia announced another renaming to Nokia Networks after the sale of the mobile communications division to Microsoft . The company is headquartered in Espoo in Finland and is registered as a company under Dutch law ( BV ).

Business activity

Nokia Networks develops and sells hardware and software components for voice, data and cellular networks as well as related services to cellular operators and service providers worldwide. The company specializes in mobile broadband solutions and, according to the company, has around 600 customers worldwide, including a large number of the largest network operators (as of 2013).

The company is divided into the two business areas Mobile Broadband and Global Services . Mobile broadband comprises software and hardware for the radio and core part of cellular networks in order to transmit voice and data services. The product portfolio includes mobile radio access technology, packet-oriented switching systems (core) and network management solutions. These mobile broadband solutions also contain components that provide additional flexibility and allow migration to cloud-based architecture (Liquid Net). Customer experience management software is used to optimize the customer experience on the Internet. Global Services includes services such as planning, installing, optimizing and maintaining networks, as well as system integration and managed services.

Corporate structure

Nokia Networks says it is represented in around 150 countries around the world. The main research and development sites are in Finland, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, India , China and the USA . Most of the production is located in China, Finland and India.

On July 19, 2010, Nokia Siemens Networks and Motorola announced that they had entered into an agreement that NSN would acquire the majority of the assets in Motorola's wireless network infrastructure business for $ 1.2 billion. However, the final purchase price was only 975 million. The purchase gave NSN around 50 mobile operators as new customers.

Realignment

On May 4, 2007, the company announced that it was planning to cut around 9,000 jobs worldwide by the end of 2010. This should affect around 2,900 employees in Germany and around 1,600 employees in Finland. Business areas that would not be in focus in the future should be outsourced to external business partners. On November 23, 2011, the company's management announced that it would cut a further 17,000 jobs by 2013 in order to be competitive and profitable in the long term. As part of the announced restructuring, the management of NSN decided to give up the fixed line business completely and to concentrate on the core business with mobile broadband networks and related services. Edge areas should be sold or recycled. On January 31, 2012, the company announced that 2,900 of the 9100 jobs in Germany were to be cut and some of the company's locations were to be closed. However, contrary to what was announced, some locations were excluded from the closings.

The company currently employs around 2000 people in Germany in Berlin, Bonn, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Leipzig, Mannheim, Munich, Nuremberg, Stuttgart and Ulm.
