The Sum Handagai ( Chinese  罕达盖苏 木 , Pinyin Hǎndágài Sūmù , chandagai : Mongolian for "elk") is located in the south of the New Left Bargu Banner , which belongs to the administrative area of the city of Hulun Buir in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China . In 1957 a shepherd's cooperative called Bayan Burd was founded here, which was converted into Sum Nomhan Burd in 1984 after various stages of collectivization (state farm, people's commune ) and subsequent re-privatization. After the relocation of the administrative headquarters from Nomhan Burd to Handagai, the Sum was also renamed Handagai in 2001.

Handagai has an area of 1,513.25 km² and borders the state of Mongolia in the west over a length of 145 km . At the end of 2003 there were 1,153 inhabitants, mainly Mongolians (population density 0.76 inh / km²). The economy is dominated by Mongolian migrant cattle breeding.

Handagai is made up of four Gaqaa ("villages"):

  • Gaqaa Bayan Burd (巴音 布 日 德嘎 查), over 490 km², 322 inhabitants,
  • Gaqaa Nomhan Burd (诺 门 罕布 日 德嘎 查), over 380 km², 302 inhabitants,
  • Gaqaa Qagan Nur (查 干 诺尔嘎 查), almost 70 km², 232 inhabitants,
  • Gaqaa Handagai (罕达盖嘎 查), over 570 km², 297 inhabitants.

Nomhan Burd is also known as Nomonhan . The place is on the Chalcha River , where one of the greatest battles in the Japanese-Soviet border conflict between the Kwantung Army of Japan , which at that time had occupied northeast China, and the Red Army of the Soviet Union was fought.
