Nong Khiaw ( Lao : ໜອງ ຂຽວ ) is a place in the province of Luang Prabang in northern Laos . It is located about 140 km northeast of the provincial capital Luang Prabang on the banks of the Nam Ou River . Nong Khiaw has gained in importance for tourism in recent years and is a popular stop for individual travelers between Luang Prabang and the northern province of Phongsali .
One of the main attractions is the boat traffic on the Nam Ou, which continues to play an important role in the domestic transport of people and goods. However, the construction of a dam has severely restricted boat traffic between Nong Khiaw and Muang Khua in the north since the end of 2017.
