Nonsi Nimibut
Nonsi Nimibut (alternative spelling: Nonzee Nimibutr , also Nonsree Nimibut ; Thai : นนทรี ย์ นิ มิ บุตร ; * 1962 in the province of Nonthaburi , Thailand) is a Thai director , screenwriter and producer . He is considered one of the pioneers of the Thai film scene, which was renewed in the 1990s.
Life and accomplishments
Nonsi Nimibut completed a degree in visual communication at Silpakorn University in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts. His fellow students included the later director and screenwriter Wisit Sasanatieng and the production designer Ek Iemchuen. He began his artistic career as a director of commercials and music videos, which brought him some references at the time.
At a time when the Thai film industry was completely shattered - people were often producing cheap mass productions and only very few domestic feature film productions made it into cinemas - Nonsi made his debut in 1997 with the gangster film Dang Bireley's and Young Gangsters, the true story of the criminal Piak Visutkasat, who plays himself as an old man in the film. Nonsi's feature film debut advanced to an audience success in Thailand, breaking all box office records with around 75 million hits and was well received by both critics and moviegoers. With this flick, whose script was written by Wisit Sasanatieng, he achieved his national breakthrough and an international success.
His second feature film, Nang Nak - Return from the Dead , followed in 1999 , and although it is the 21st film adaptation of a popular Thai folk tale that was once again a box-office hit in his home country, the audience again received this "Thai phenomenon" well. The material, which oscillates between love and ghost stories and the staging of which was included in international film exploitation, fetched 150 million baht - twelve times its production costs. A sum that was hardly thought possible by Thai standards and consequently a new record.
In view of this commercial success, Nimibut founded his own production company Cinemasia and, with foreign capital from the Chinese Applause Pictures, founded in 2000, produced his third full-length feature film Jan Dara with Hong Kong actress Christy Chung , which caused heated controversy in Thailand even before it was released he addressed sensitive issues such as incest, rape and abortion. As a result, the film was only available for local distribution with significant cuts, whereas it was shown uncut at international film festivals .
