Course of the Noord-Willems-Kanaal

The Nord-Willemskanal ( Dutch Noord-Willemskanaal ) is the shipping connection between the Drentsche Hoofdvaart west of Assen and the city of Groningen in the Netherlands . The canal runs roughly parallel to the A28 motorway, is 38 km long and 2 m deep.

history

The canal was built and operated on the basis of a royal concession from June 23, 1855 by a company, the Noord-Willemskanaal Maatschappij , based in Groningen. In 1861 the canal was completed and after King Willem III. named. It is called Noord -Willemskanaal because there was already a Willemskanal in Noord-Brabant .

After the concession, which was limited to 99 years, the Dutch state took over the canal.

Locks

The canal has three locks :

  • north of Assen (near Peelo)
  • Lock III, approx. 1.5 km north of Vries
  • Lock IV, at De Punt, a village in the municipality of Tynaarlo in Drenthe

Since the canal between Haren and Groningen roughly follows the course of the Hoornsediep (Drentse Aa), this part is often still called that.
