Life

origin

Karl came from the Brandenstein family . He was the son of the later Prussian Lieutenant General Karl August von Brandenstein (born January 24, 1792 in Nauen ; † March 30, 1863 in Berlin) and his wife Auguste Friederike Bernhardine, née von Rieben (born March 7, 1796 in Tschilesen; † 10 July 1853 in Münster). The Prussian Lieutenant General Friedrich von Brandenstein (1786-1857) was his uncle.

Military career

Brandenstein was educated in the cadet corps from May 1846 and joined the Emperor Alexander Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 1 in 1849 as a portepeef ensign . There he became second lieutenant on September 19, 1850 and from 1853 acted as adjutant of the fusilier battalion. From 1855 to 1858 he attended the General War School and served during this command with the 5th Artillery Regiment and the Guards Pioneer Department . In 1862 he became a teacher at the war school in Potsdam, and in the following year he joined the 16th Division as a general staff officer .

After he was transferred to the General Staff of the VIII. Army Corps in December 1865 , he took part in the German-Austrian War in 1866 with the High Command of the Elbar Army and was promoted to major . After the end of the war he was a general staff officer in the grand ducal Hessian division and joined the general staff in June 1868 .

In preparation for the Franco-Prussian War , Brandenstein worked out the plans for the railway department in the General Staff. It is thanks to his organizational skills that the German troops were able to march on the border with France with great speed . In July 1870 Brandenstein was promoted to lieutenant colonel. During the war he stayed at the main headquarters and was one of the closest collaborators of Field Marshal Moltke . In May 1871 he was appointed head of the railway department.

On January 18, 1875, Brandenstein was promoted to colonel and on June 15, he was entrusted with the rank and powers of brigade commander. After he was promoted to major general, he was put on disposition for health reasons with the prospect of reinstatement in May 1876 . After restoring his health, Brandenstein returned to service on March 30, 1883, and was promoted to Lieutenant General on May 15, 1883, commander of the 31st Division . At the same time, from August 16, 1884, he also ran the business as governor of Strasbourg. On November 3, 1884, King Wilhelm I appointed him head of the engineer and pioneer corps .

Due to his deteriorating health, he could not continue this position from February 13, 1886. Brandenstein died shortly afterwards in Berlin and was buried on March 20, 1886 in the Invalidenfriedhof there.
