Friedrich August Karl von Brandenstein (born November 26, 1786 in Flatow (Osthavelland district), † March 11, 1857 in Potsdam ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

His parents were Wilhelm August von Brandenstein (* July 2, 1738; † February 12, 1815) and his wife Johanna Luise Sophie Henriette, born von Hake (* August 20, 1761; † July 6, 1831). His father was a Prussian lieutenant colonel a. D. , most recently in the infantry regiment of Prince August Ferdinand of Prussia . His mother was a sister of General of the Infantry Karl Georg Albrecht Ernst von Hake . His brother Karl August (1792–1863) was also a Prussian lieutenant general.

Military career

Brandenstein came in 1799 as a page to King Friedrich Wilhelm III. From 1802 to 1806 he attended the university and on April 12, 1806 joined the infantry regiment "von Borcke" of the Prussian army as a second lieutenant . During the Fourth Coalition War Brandenstein took part in the defense of Kolberg and the battles on the Münde, on the high mountain, as well as in the storms on the Wolfsberg. On April 1, 1807 he came to the grenadier battalion "Waldenfels" and received on July 31, 1807 the order Pour le Mérite .

On August 20, 1808 he was transferred to the Leib-Infanterie-Regiment (No. 8) . Here Brandenstein was promoted to Prime Lieutenant on March 15, 1812, and a day later he was transferred to the General Staff. During the Russian campaign in 1812 he fought at Baust, Eckau, Olai and Ruhenthal. On April 27, 1813 he was promoted to staff captain. During the Wars of Liberation , Brandenstein fought in the battles near Großgörschen , Bautzen , Dresden , Kulm , Leipzig , Bar-sur-Aube , La Rothière , Fère-Champeniose , Ligny and Belle Alliance . He also took part in the battles near Haynau , Teplitz, Gießhübel, Kösen, Hochheim, Etoges and Bondis as well as the sieges of Hüningen, Neubreisach and Schlettstadt. At that time he was assigned to the Austrian corps of Prince Schwarzenberg on January 6, 1814 , promoted to captain on September 15, 1814 and awarded the Knight's Cross of the Leopold Order on October 5, 1814 . Previously he had received the Iron Cross II. Class for Bautzen and the First Class Cross for La-Fere-Champeniose.

On February 9, 1815 Brandenstein was major in the General Staff of the III. Army Corps . In this position he was awarded the oak leaves to the order Pour le Mérite on October 2, 1815. On January 2, 1816, he was transferred to the General Staff . This was followed by a position as Chief of the General Staff of the IV Army Corps from May 3, 1821 . On March 30, 1824 Brandenstein was transferred to the 8th Army Corps as the Chief of the General Staff on July 8, 1824 . On January 24, 1826 he was accepted into the Order of St. John and promoted to colonel on March 30, 1829 with a patent from April 15, 1829 . On March 30, 1835, Brandenstein was transferred to the 5th Landwehr Brigade as commander and on April 14, 1835, he received approval to continue wearing the uniform of the General Staff. On March 30, 1836 he was promoted to major general and on March 30, 1838, he was transferred to the 6th Infantry Brigade as commander. Emperor Nikolaus I awarded Brandenstein the Russian Order of St. Stanislaus I Class on October 5, 1838 . From April 27, 1842 to October 25, 1843 he was commander of the 4th Division and then took over the 9th Division . At the same time Brandenstein also acted as first in command of Glogau . In this position he was promoted to major general on March 30, 1844 . On the occasion of the festival of the Order, Brandenstein was awarded the star for the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves, on January 18, 1845 . On 5 December 1848 he received his farewell to the statutory pension .

After his departure, Brandenstein became senior of the Iron Cross, 2nd class on August 4, 1855, with an annual honorary salary of 50 thalers. On January 13, 1857, he received the crown to the order Pour le Mérite. He died shortly afterwards on March 11, 1857 in Potsdam.

Brandenstein married on January 2, 1818 in Hohen-Lübbichow Julie von Zychlinski (* May 18, 1798 - February 9, 1871), a daughter of Karl Boguslav von Zychlinski (1744–1800) and Dorothee Elisabeth Henriette von der Marwitz (1767 -1829). The couple had several children:

  • Karl August Wilhelm Ehrenfried (* August 22, 1819 - † August 9, 1894), member of the Prussian manor house, President of the Appeal Court ⚭ 1848 Thekla von Stößer (* July 10, 1821 - † February 9, 1871), a daughter of Lieutenant General Karl Eduard Christian von Stoesser
