Nootka Island is an island on the west coast of Vancouver Island , in British Columbia (Western Canada ), with an area of 510 km² and a circumference of 187 km. It is separated from Vancouver Island by Nootka Sound .
The island's name comes from the Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) indigenous people on Vancouver Island .
It is not certain who was the first European to discover the island. Both James Cook and before him Juan José Pérez Hernández sailed the coasts of the area. The British navigator John Meares is believed to be the first European to set foot on the island in 1788 .
