Norbert Franconia

Norbert Franken (* 1961 in Kempen ) is a German classical archaeologist .

From 1982 to 1991 Norbert Franken studied Classical Archeology, Ancient History , Prehistory and Early History , Provincial Roman Archeology and Christian Archeology at the Universities of Bonn and Freiburg . In 1991 he was with Nikolaus Himmelmann in Bonn with a dissertation on the subject of Aequipondia. Doctorate of figurative barrel weights of Roman and early Byzantine high-speed scales . In 1991/92 he was awarded a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute , with the help of which he traveled to the Mediterranean .

From 1994 to 1996, Franken was employed at the University of Münster , from 1999/2000 as a museum assistant at the Roman-Germanic Museum in Cologne and from 2002 to 2003 as an assistant at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken . Between August 2004 and February 2011, Franken was employed by the Antikensammlung Berlin . He was commissioned there to develop the extensive collection of antique bronzes, which has been online as the Antike Bronzen image database in Berlin since September 2011. For this purpose, Franken processed more than 8000 bronze objects from the Berlin collection on the basis of Carl Friederichs ' work Antike Bronzen und Geräte in the Altes Museum from 1871 as well as the acquisitions made up to 1945. Building on the merger of the East and West Berlin collections of antiques in 1995 The aim of this new development is to comprehensively view, identify and document both the preserved holdings and the extensive war losses for the first time. He was able to identify 10% more bronzes than was previously known. For the exhibition The Return of the Gods - Berlin's Hidden Olympus , he worked as a scientific advisor.
