Norbert M. Seel

Norbert M. Seel (* 1947 in Ottenhausen ) is a German educational scientist .

Life

After studying to be a teacher and working as a teacher at a secondary school for several years, he studied educational science, history and psychology at Saarland University in Saarbrücken. From 1972 to 1978 he was a research assistant at the University of Education of the Saarland, and he held the same position until 1981 at the University of the Saarland. From 1981 to 1988 he was Scientific Councilor or Senior Councilor at Saarland University, where he received his doctorate in 1979 and habilitated in 1989. In 1988 he was appointed professor for advanced training through telecommunications at the German Institute for Distance Learning Research (DIFF) at the University of Tübingen. In 1993 he was offered the chair for School Education: Empirical Teaching Research at the Technical University of Dresden , which he held until 1998. From 1993 to 1997 he was Dean of the Faculty of Education there. In 1998 he accepted the chair for Educational Science I, succeeding Gunther Eigler at the University of Freiburg . In 2012 he retired.

In 2004 he was offered a call to Florida State University , where he temporarily taught as Adjunct Distinguished Professor until 2009. As a visiting professor, he also taught at Syracuse University (New York) and the German University in Cairo (Egypt). Since 2015 he has been visiting professor at the National Research University Higher School of Economics in Moscow.

Research priorities

His research focuses on the investigation of learning and thinking under the special conditions of teaching and training. In particular, he dedicates himself to application-oriented basic research on mental models and their influence through multimedia systems, whose learning and transfer-effective design was the focus of his development projects. Another focus is on the educational-psychological diagnosis of dynamic changes in cognitive structures and moral decision-making processes.

Publications (selection)

Norbert M. Seel is the author of numerous monographs and more than 200 articles in scientific journals and books. Among other things, he wrote the textbooks “Psychology of Learning” and “Educational Science” (in cooperation with Ulrike Hanke). He is also the editor of the multi-volume Encyclopedia of the Sciences of Learning, published in 2012 .
