from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Norbert Günter Trautmann (* 1939 in Straubing ) is a German chemist . Until his retirement he was the operations manager of the research reactor TRIGA Mainz. The focus of his research was the rapid chemical separation of fission product mixtures, the chemistry of the heaviest elements and ultra-trace analysis with resonance ionization mass spectrometry with laser excitation.

Trautmann studied chemistry at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and received his doctorate in nuclear chemistry in 1968. His postdoctoral -time spent in Berkeley with Glenn T. Seaborg and Albert Ghiorso . Fritz Straßmann recruited him for Mainz. After that he was first deputy and from 1991 for 15 years operations manager of the Mainz research reactor .

In 1984 the nuclear chemistry specialist group in the Society of German Chemists awarded him the Fritz-Straßmann Prize. In 1998 he was awarded the Otto Hahn Prize of the City of Frankfurt am Main together with Jens Volker Kratz from the Institute for Nuclear Chemistry, Mainz, and Hans Blix . In March 2007 he received the Glenn T. Seaborg Award for Nuclear Chemistry from the American Chemical Society. On December 17, 2008, Norbert Trautmann was awarded the honorary professorship as part of a symposium on the discovery of nuclear fission 70 years ago at the University of Mainz. On November 30, 2010 he was awarded the State Order of Merit by Kurt Beck, Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate . In 2019 he received the Medal of Honor from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.
