The Norbury Brook is a watercourse in the London Borough of Croydon and the London Borough of Merton . It arises near Lower Addiscombe Road and often flows underground in a northwest direction through Selhurst , Thornton Heath and Norbury . It flows into the River Wandle in the south of Wimbledon .

description

A short stretch of the watercourse is visible south of Norwood on Heavers' Meadow near Selhurst Station . There the Norbury Brook runs in a concrete channel along a railroad plant. He returns below the surface on Selhurst Road. The watercourse is fenced in here, as it can swell considerably within a few minutes when it rains due to surface water running off.

The watercourse comes back to the surface at Thornton Heath Recreation Ground and runs to the west of the park. Here, too, the Norbury Brook flows in a concrete canal, the low water level of which can rise rapidly when it rains. The run continues to Norbury Park.

The Norbury Brook runs to the Hermitage Bridge in a westerly direction as the border between Norbury and Streatham along the London Road. West of the bridge the watercourse becomes the River Graveney and flows into the River Wandle.

Naming

The course of the Graveney is mentioned as early as 1801 in the law for the construction of the Croydon Canal, here still referred to as “it is 'a certain watercourse or stream'”. In 1812 the watercourse was named “Addiscomb Brook”, based on the location of the source. Since 1865, the upper reaches in the area of Norbury as "Norbury Brook" and the lower reaches from Tooting Graveney Parish by the Ordnance Survey as "Graveney River".
