The white elephant

Critics call the line the White Elephant , something prestigious but not very useful. In particular, they cite the higher fares despite the discontinuation of the drivers and the below-expected passenger numbers (170,000 / day 2003 ), which lead to losses on the line. Proponents counter this by saying that the north-east line in particular is a technical breakthrough that demonstrates the world level of Singapore's traffic technology. See also Bukit Panjang LRT .
