The Northern Azure damsel ( Coenagrion johanssoni ) is a species of dragonfly from the family of the slender dragonflies (Coenagrionidae).

features

The dragonflies reach a body length of 27 to 30 millimeters. The fourth and fifth abdomen segments of the male are completely black. All other abdominal segments of the male are colored blue and have a pattern, from the side it looks like an M. When viewed from above, the abdominal segments of the male are striped black and blue. The species has many similarities with the horseshoe damsel . The female is also colored blue, the differences from the female are that it has three lines that also spread across all abdominal segments.

Occurrence

The dragonflies are found in Northern Europe . They are mainly found in ponds and other bodies of water and on dunes.

Way of life

Hundreds of these dragonflies can appear in some areas e.g. B. on the coasts or in swamps. Like many other dragonflies, this one also eats insects that it catches in flight. When mating, the male grabs the female below the head with her cerci , as with the horseshoe azure maidens. The dragonflies do the mating wheel for fertilization . Before mating, the male fills the seminal vesicle , located on the 3rd abdominal segment, with sperm by curving the abdomen . Then the eggs are fertilized. The eggs are also laid in pairs in tandem. The eggs are usually laid from the air on bushes. It takes about 3 to 5 weeks for the larva to hatch.

Larval development

The larva lives in streams, as well as in ponds. It takes about a year for the larva to become the finished insect.
