Naval Station Norfolk
The Naval Station Norfolk is a base of the US Navy in Norfolk , Virginia . It is located on the Sewell's Point peninsula on Hampton Roads . It is the largest naval base in the world.
history
After the Jamestown Exposition took place on the site of what would later be the base in 1907 , naval officers found the site to be well suited for naval activities. However, since the Navy bought a ship the following year, the land could not afford it. It was only after entering the First World War (April 1917) that Naval Minister Josephus Daniels acquired the land for 1.2 million US dollars. Another 1.6 million were spent on the construction. The material that arose from the excavation of the berths was used to dry out more land in the area, which made it possible to further enlarge the base. The established airfield was spun off as early as 1918 , but with the Naval Station Norfolk Chambers Field (IATA: NGU , ICAO: KNGU , FAA LID: NGU ) there is again an airfield within the base.
After the war the base was less used; A revival began in the late 1930s. The Second World War gave another boost. In 1953 the name of the base was changed from Naval Operating Base to Naval Station Norfolk .
Today the base is the permanent home port for four aircraft carriers , over 30 other warships, eight amphibious warfare ships and six submarines .
