Norman ( Nachum ) Lamm (born December 19, 1927 in Brooklyn , New York , United States ; died May 31, 2020 ) was a well -known American modern Orthodox rabbi , scholar, and author . He was the Chancellor of Yeshiva University until he announced his resignation on July 1, 2013.

Lamm had a Ph.D. in Jewish philosophy . From 1976 to 2003, he succeeded Samuel Belkin as the third president of Yeshiva University (YU), the first to be born in the United States. He was a student of Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik (one of the most influential modern scholars of Orthodox Judaism ), which it in 1951 at Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS, the rabbinical school at the YU) rabbi ordained .
