Normanby Hall

Normanby Hall is a classical mansion in the village of Burton-upon-Stather , 8 km north of Scunthorpe in the English administrative unit North Lincolnshire .

The house that can be seen today was built by Sir Robert Sheffield from 1825 to 1830 according to the plans of Robert Smirke . The Sheffield family had lived on this property since 1539 and they held the titles of the Dukes of Buckingham and Normanby and the Baronets of Sheffield. The house, which has survived to this day, replaced an early building from the 17th century.

John Sheffield became Duke of Buckingham and Normanby in 1703. In London he had a beautiful town house built called Buckingham House . His son, Edmund Sheffield , sold this house to George III. ; it is known today as Buckingham Palace .

The mansion was rebuilt and expanded from 1906 to 1908 according to plans by Walter Brierley .

The Sheffield family left Normanby Hall in 1963. They now belong to North Lincolnshire Council . The former 1.4 km² property is now a landscape park . There are restored fenced gardens from Victorian times , a farm museum, a stable yard, duck ponds, a deer enclosure, a fish pond, a miniature railway and mixed deciduous forest.

Samantha Cameron , wife of the Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron and elder daughter of the 8th Baronet Sheffield, grew up on the estate.
