Norris Castle - East Cowes

Norris Castle is a mansion at the northeast end of the village of East Cowes on the Isle of Wight . It was designed by James Wyatt in 1799 for Lord Henry Seymour in the Norman style . It has a crenellated facade but is not a real castle. The battlements were never used for defense. Originally the house was used for social events. Despite its size, it only has four bedrooms. Most of the interior of the building is taken up by just one room and the connecting corridor is very massive. This creates the impression of a large castle. English Heritage listed the house as a Grade I Historic Building in 1951.

Wyatt also designed a farm further inside the island in the same style.

George IV visited the manor in 1819 and Princess Alexandrina, who later became Queen Victoria , and her mother, Victoire in 1831. Victoire stayed again in 1859 at Norris Castle. Queen Victoria later bought Osborne House , the property to the east. From 1880 to 1903 the manor belonged to the Duke of Bedford and his wife. The German Kaiser Wilhelm II was a frequent visitor.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the mansion was open to the public; today it is closed.
