The Norrköping class was a speedboat class of the Swedish Navy .

history

Between 1971 and 1974 twelve units were built by Karlskronavarvet AB in Karlskrona . Since the boats were based on the experiences made with the Spica class , they were also called Spica II . The boats were named after Swedish cities.

drive

The Norrkoping Class boats were three Rolls-Royce Proteus - gas turbines equipped, which worked on three screws. Due to technical problems, all three turbines were rarely in operation at the same time, so that the actual maximum speed was limited to 40 knots.

Armament

Initially developed as a pure torpedo carrier, it was - following the international development in warship construction - examined whether the boats are suitable as carriers for guided missiles. HMS Piteå served as the test vehicle. After the tests were completed, the boats were equipped with the RBS 15 guided missile system as their main armament from 1981 onwards . This also changed the letter of the identifier from T (Torpedbåt) to R (Robotbåt). The boats were now missile speedboats .

The boats were equipped with a 57 mm Bofors 7101 gun with an effective range of 8500 m. The gun could be used against sea, air and land targets.

Conversion to the Ystad class

Between 1996 and 2000, six boats received a new combat command system. After the first converted boat, the HMS Ystad (R142) , these boats are called the Ystad class .

The conversion measures were intended to extend the life of the boats until the Visby class 2010 was fully operational . For financial reasons, the boats were taken out of service earlier than planned. The last two boats, HMS Norrköping and HMS Ystad , took down their flag for the last time on September 1, 2005.
