North American Antiepileptic Drug Pregnancy Registry

The North American Antiepileptic Drug Pregnancy Registry is a database that collects information on the safety of anti-epileptic drugs taken during pregnancy in the United States and Canada .

It was founded in 1997 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and built with funds from six pharmaceutical companies that sell "old" and "new" anti-epileptic drugs . However, it sees itself as an independent institution. By October 2005 it was possible to collect data from 4749 pregnancies under antiepileptic therapy.

In particular, questions about the teratogenicity (harmful effects on the embryo ) of anti-epileptic drugs that were taken during pregnancy for whatever reason are of interest .

Data have since been on the safety of valproic acid , phenobarbital and last of lamotrigine published new to the one (to 24-fold) increased contrary to earlier publications relative risk for non- syndromic isolated cleft lip and cleft palate was found.

In Europe and various other countries, the EURAP (European Register of Pregnancies with Antiepileptic Drugs) is comparable to this institution.
