North Andaman or Engl. North Andaman Island is the northernmost of the three large main Andaman Islands in the Indian Ocean . Politically, the island belongs to the Indian Andaman and Nicobar Union territory .

geography

North Andaman is the second largest Andaman island by area. It is located immediately north of the largest island in Central Andaman , from which it is only separated by a strait a few hundred meters wide , and south of Landfall Island , the northernmost island of the Andaman Islands. The island is 80 km long, up to 29 km wide and has an area of 1376 km². It is more mountainous than the islands in the south of the Andaman Islands and reaches a height of 738 m above sea level in Saddle Peak, which is also the highest point in the entire archipelago.

The largest city on the island is Diglipur on the east coast with around 43,000 inhabitants (as of 2001 - the urban area includes the entire island and five other inhabited islands). North Andaman is home to Saddle Peak National Park , one of nine national parks in the Andaman and Nicobar Union Territory.

As of the 2001 census, the island had a total of 42,163 inhabitants.

population

Today none of the indigenous people of the Great Andamanese , for example the Bo , live on North Andaman and all Andaman languages originally spoken on the island have died out. The island is populated by ethnic groups and their descendants who have immigrated from the Indian mainland.
