North Canberra , also known as Inner North , is a borough of Canberra , the capital of Australia . It is 206.7 km² and comprises 15 districts with a total of 40,142 inhabitants (2003). The district is the oldest part of Canberra at all and was built largely in accordance with the plans of Walter Burley Griffin . Almost all parts of the city were created in 1928; in 1960, Downer, Hackett and Watson were added. To the south lies Lake Burley Griffin , in the east of Mount Majura and north of Mount Ainslie . The Barton Highway and the Federal Highway form the northern border.
