The Northeast River (English for "northeastern river") is a 15 km long tributary of Placentia Bay in the east of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Newfoundland Island .

River course

The Northeast River runs east of the Avalon Peninsula . It forms the outflow of the approximately 120  m high Rhodies Pond . It flows in a south-westerly direction. At river kilometer 13 the small lake Fitzgeralds Pond lies on the river. On its east bank is the 1.63 km² Fitzgerald's Pond Provincial Park Reserve , which was set up to protect the lichen-forming species Erioderma pedicellatum from the Pannariaceae family . There are several rapids below the lake. At a 6.4 m high waterfall, which was an obstacle for migratory fish , rocks were blown away in 1965 and 1972 in order to enable fish to pass into the upstream river system. The Northeast River eventually flows into the head end of the Northeast Arm , a 9.5 km long narrow bay that opens to the sea at Placentia . The Route 100 follows the entire course of the river.

Hydrology

The Northeast River drains an area of 92.9 km². The mean discharge is 4 m³ / s. The highest monthly discharges usually occur in April with an average of 6.21 m³ / s.

Fish fauna

The salmon population in the Northeast River system is considered "threatened". In addition to the Atlantic salmon, the following fish species are also found in the Northeast River: Arctic char , American eel , brook char (anadromous and non-anadromous form), arctic smelt and three-spined and nine-spined stickleback .
