Notaeolidia depressa is a nudibranch snail belonging to the genus Notaeolidia , which belongs to the family of Notaeolidiidae . Little is known about the species so far.

features

Notaeolidia depressa grow up to 65 millimeters long and about 25 mm wide.

In the head area they have a throat with a rasp tongue ( radula ), tentacles near the throat , and on the top of the head a pair of rhinophores (paired olfactory organ). The radula has one central tooth per transverse row and 4 to 6 lateral teeth on each side.

The back of the body is surrounded by a single or row of fringed cerata of different sizes, up to 8 mm long . They serve to support breathing. A Notaeolidia depressa has up to about 100 such cerata. So-called nettle sacks ( cnido sacks ) sit at their tips . They contain nettle capsules ( nematocytes and spirocysts ).

The Notaeolidia depressa are translucent white, the brown or red ducts of the midgut gland (“liver”) can be seen through the skin. The tips of the cerata, the rhinophores on the top of the head, the edge of the foot are pigmented white;

Way of life

Almost nothing is known about the way of life of the species.

Nematocytes were found in the stomach and intestines of one specimen. This suggests a kleptocidal diet in cnidarians . It is also known that the sister species Notaeolidia gigas differs from polyps of the Tubularia species ( Hydrozoen ). nourishes.

The Notaeolidia depressa like all opisthobranchs a hermaphrodite gland and are not autoflowering hybrid , that need a partner for fertilization.

Habitats

The Notaeolidia depressa only live in Antarctic waters around the Antarctic Peninsula and Bouvet Island . It was found at a depth of 30 to 430 meters.

Systematics

The identification of the species of the genus Notaeolidia is not yet completed. Many new species of the genus Notaeolidia were discovered in various expeditions . However, there are too few specimens for comparison , not only of the genus Notaeolidia , but also of various Antarctic nudibranchs to be able to determine sufficiently relevant differences for the species status. The biologist H.Wägele therefore suspects that many species considered to be new are not different at all. In the case of the genus Notaeolidia , H. Wägele suspects

  • that the following species are synonyms for the Notaeolidia depressa :
    • N. alutacea Minichev, 1972,
    • N. flava Minichev, 1972,
    • N. robsoni NH Odhner, 1934,
    • N. rufopicta J. Thiele, 1912,
    • N. subgigas NH Odhner, 1944,
  • that there are only the following three species in the genus Notaeolidia :
