Nothospecies

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the botanical nomenclature, a hybrid between two species is called Nothospecies or hybrid species . Hybrid species are denoted by binomials , the genus name being separated from the specific epithet by a mal sign (×) . Alternatively, hybrid types are also given by a formula, with the binomials of the parent types separated by a mal sign.

Hybrid forms below the nothospecies, i.e. below the species level, are called nothomorphs .

example

The hybrid of sickle clover ( Medicago falcata ) and alfalfa ( Medicago sativa ) is the Nothospecies bastard alfalfa ( Medicago × varia or Medicago falcata × Medicago sativa ).
