With Notnagel is called a nail-shaped Abseilhaken, who until the 1960s to equip the firefighters belonged. It consisted of a strong, pointed iron pin with an eyelet on the side through which a rope could be passed. The emergency nail was carried in a small pocket on the hook strap . If it was no longer possible to retreat through the building to the outside while fighting the fire , the firefighter could drive the emergency nail into a wooden window frame or other suitable place and then abseil through a window with a rope.

There was also a version as an emergency ring , which was invented by C. Setz in Riedlingen . A ring was used instead of the hook, and the nail was also barbed .

Proverbial meaning

In common parlance, an emergency nail is understood to be a last resort or an improvised emergency solution, but also a person who is only called in in emergencies as a stopgap . In the latter sense, the use of the term is older than that in the fire service.
