Johann Gottlob Immanuel Breitkopf

Johann Gottlob Immanuel Breitkopf (born November 23, 1719 in Leipzig ; † January 28, 1794 there ) was a German music publisher and typographer .

Life

Breitkopf was the son of the publisher Bernhard Christoph Breitkopf , who founded the Breitkopf & Härtel publishing house . He designed fonts , including the important Breitkopf Fraktur .

Breitkopf also revolutionized musical notation by breaking down the types of printing into smaller segments. Breitkopf then developed the plan to also produce maps using typography. He presented this to a broader public in 1777 in the publication Ueber the printing of geographical charts . He also tried to print Chinese characters with movable types.

Goethe often stayed in Breitkopf's house during his studies in Leipzig. He took part in amateur performances and music events and was friends with Breitkopf's daughter Theodora Sophie Constantia (Constanze, 1748-1818).

family

On September 25, 1746 in Leipzig, he married Friderica Constantia Brix with whom he had five sons and four daughters, including:

  • Theodora Sophia Constantia Breitkopf (1748–1818), the first Egle in Goethe's Die Laune des Verliebten , was a writer.
  • Bernhard Theodor Breitkopf (* 1749, † between 1810 and 1820 in Petersburg), a friend of Goethe and the composer of his poems in the "Leipziger Liederbuch"
  • Christoph Gottlob Breitkopf (1750–1800), heir and head of his father's business, also a friend of Goethe
