Architecture and equipment

Overall picture and location

The church, popularly known as Immac , presents itself outside in the form of a Romanesque-Byzantine fortress and inside in the form of a huge censer. The ship is 30 m long and 17.50 m wide. The dome choir forms a square of almost 40 by 40 m. The rich furnishings originally planned could not be realized.

The church is located to the west on Rue Pierre Corneille and to the east on Avenue du Maréchal-de-Saxe. Neighbor to the north is the 19th century Hôtel de préfecture du Rhône (prefecture building of the Rhône department ). The church now belongs to the parish of Saint-Pothin.

Building history

By imperial decree in 1855, the parish of the Immaculate Conception (French: Immaculée Conception ) was created in an up-and-coming district to the left of the Rhône . After the dogma of the Immaculate Conception was proclaimed on December 8, 1854, the name was given for the first time in France. In 1856, pastor Auguste Coudour (1819-1892) began building the parish church, the planning of which was entrusted to Pierre Bossan. The construction supervision had Wilhelm (also: William) Léo (1820-1891), Bossan's employee of Westphalian descent. After the nave (with crypt) was completed in 1859, Cardinal de Bonald gave the first partial inauguration .

The final section started in 1868 with dome choir and chapel wreath, now under the direction of a pupil of Bossan's, Charles-Marie Franchet (1838-1902), soon came to a standstill and was not completed until 1892-1897. Cardinal Pierre-Hector Coullié was able to inaugurate it in 1897. The stained glass windows are by Lucien Bégule (1848–1935).

Chapels

Of the total of five chapels, three should be emphasized.

The east facing choir chapel dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus was painted from 1913 to 1920 by Bruno Guillermin (1878–1947). Shown are Cardinal Camille de Neufville de Villeroy (1653–1693), who introduced the Sacred Heart Festival in Lyon, Cardinal de Bonald, the Popes Innocent XII. (1691), Clemens XII. (1730) and Pius IX. (1846), Marguerite-Marie Alacoque , Claude de la Colombière , Johannes Eudes , Bishop Belsunce of Marseille , France on his knees (with a model of Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre 1876) and Cardinal Guibert of Paris.

The south-facing chapel contains a statue of the Virgin Mary by Joseph-Hugues Fabisch .

The north-facing choir chapel is dedicated to the apostle Judas Thaddäus (with statue). It is completely lined with votive panels (text panels) on which the saint, known as a helper in hopeless situations, is thanked.

organ

The organ was built in 1900 by the descendants of the organ builder John Abbey (1785–1859) and has since been overhauled and expanded several times, most recently in baroque form in 1994.
