Joseph-Hugues Fabisch (born March 19, 1812 in Aix-en-Provence , † September 7, 1886 in Lyon ) was a French sculptor , professor at the Art Academy in Lyon and official sculptor of the Archdiocese of Lyon . He mainly created statues of Mary and saints in the spirit of the Renouveau catholique .

Life

Fabisch came from a Polish family. In 1840 he became professor of drawing at the University of Saint-Etienne . In 1845 he went to Lyon to take up a professorship at the École nationale des beaux-arts de Lyon .

He became famous for the golden statue of the Virgin Mary, which he created in 1852 for the tower of the Notre-Dame de Fourvière chapel - the neighboring basilica was not built until twenty years later - and which overlooks Lyon's old town from Fourvière hill. The day of their solemn consecration on the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary , December 8th, became the origin of the annual winter city festival Fête des Lumières .

In 1863 Fabisch was commissioned for his most famous work worldwide, the statue of the Virgin Mary, which, at the request of the founders, two Lacour sisters from Lyon, was to be erected in the Massabielle grotto near Lourdes at the place where Bernadette Soubirous had seen the apparitions of Mary. From September 15 to 19, 1863 Fabisch visited Bernadette and asked her to describe exactly how the "lady" was dressed and how she looked. On April 4, 1864, his statue was consecrated in the presence of 20,000 people. Bernadette herself could not recognize her vision in the figure - for Fabisch the "greatest grief of his artistic life". Nevertheless, his work has been copied for countless Lourdes caves all over the world.

In 1868 Fabisch created another figure of Mary for Lourdes, this one with the baby Jesus . It stands on the altar of the crypt of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception .

In 1874 Fabisch became director of the Lyons University, where he had taught since 1845.
