Noura Hussein

Noura Hussein Hamad ( Arabic نورة حسين حماد; * 1998 or 1999 ) is a Sudanese woman who was sentenced to death for murder for killing her rapist . A month later, the sentence was commuted to prison.

Life

Hussein is said to have been promised to a man by her father against her will at the age of 16. She fled from this threatened marriage to an aunt who lived far away. After finishing school in April 2017, her parents asked her to go back home on the pretext that the wedding was canceled. There, however, the wedding party and their not chosen groom were already waiting for Noura Hussein. After the involuntary marriage, she refused to sleep with him. Her husband eventually raped her with the help of three relatives. When he tried again the next day, Hussein escaped into the kitchen and grabbed a knife. She fatally injured her husband in the scuffle that followed.

Hussein's death sentence in May 2018 sparked international controversy over his justice. Amnesty International (AI) vice director in the region, Seif Magango, has called for the death penalty to be lifted and for a new trial to take place based on the circumstances. The sentence is unacceptable and cruel, the young woman only wanted to protect herself. The court in Omdurman , however, denied, among other things, that there was rape in marriage. On the occasion of the verdict, Magango also called for the Sudanese law to be changed, which allows marriages to be held at the age of ten.

In June 2018, the death sentence was overturned and commuted to a five-year prison term. In addition, Hussein has to pay a sum of money equivalent to about 16,000 euros (18,700 US dollars) to the family of the killed husband.
