Nouster Pier

Nouster Pier is a shipping pier with two storage and residential buildings on the Scottish Orkney island of Papa Westray . In 2000 the facility was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category C.

history

The jetty in Nouster was built in connection with the harvest and processing of seaweed into kelpasche (see also brown algae # use ). This occupation was the Orkney's main source of income between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. After peaking around 1825, interest in Kelpasche ebbed in the 1830s and 1840s. The Nouster Pier dates from the later 18th century, the heyday of the kelp industry. It is a building by the Traill family (see also Holland House ). The kelp collectors' boats moored at the jetty and the seaweed that was collected was stored in the associated buildings after drying and burned in kelp kilns. After the collapse of the kelp industry, the buildings continued to be used as warehouses. A former associated boat shed is no longer preserved today.
