Novarka is a French consortium set up to build a new safe confinement for the Chernobyl nuclear power plant . Members of the consortium are the companies Vinci , Bouygues (both France), Nukem (Germany / England), Hochtief (Germany) and some Ukrainian companies.

On August 8, 2007, the Ukrainian authorities announced that Novarka had been awarded the contract for a price of 453 million euros. The total cost of the project, which was originally supposed to be completed by October 2005, but is now expected to be completed in 2015 [obsolete] , has been around $ 990 million so far.

Financiers

A large part of the money for the 856 million euro " C hernobyl S helter F und (CSF)" from which the project is financed comes from the EU budget . The payments of the individual countries are made up as follows: USA 19.16%, Germany 8.35%, United Kingdom 6.57%, Ukraine 6.22%, Japan 5.19%, France 5.77%, Canada 4 , 82%, Italy 4.55%, other countries 12.35%.

Project planning

The planning and construction of the new protective cover, which began in October 2007 and consists of several individual segments, will be carried out in parallel at three locations under the leadership of Vinci Construction and Bouygues. In Guyancourt ( Paris ) there is a team that is responsible for the management and coordination of the project. A Ukrainian office of the consortium is located in Kiev , whose task it is to carry out licensing planning, which includes, for example, machines, cranes and disposal systems (Solid Radwaste Management (ICSRM)) for contaminated material that is used on the construction site. In addition, there are specially built office spaces directly on site at the power plant, where one deals with the preparation for the construction. Risks from possible fires, tornadoes and earthquakes were also included in the planning.

Current situation

Currently (as of July 2019) all work on the construction of the protective cover has been completed and the protective cover was handed over to the owner of the Energoatom nuclear power plant on July 10th by the consortium entrusted with the construction . The final commissioning of the 100-year construction will take place in autumn 2019. On April 22nd, the "New Safe Confinement" was successfully tested for 72 hours in trial operation. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyj was present at the handover, in addition to representatives of the donors, states and construction companies .
