Novellus Systems was a United States company and headquartered in San José , California . The company was listed in the S&P 500 share index. The company, founded in 1984 by Brad Mattson, employed 3,698 people (August 2008). The company has offices in Tualatin, Oregon and San José, California.

Novellus Systems develops, manufactures, and sells manufacturing equipment used in the manufacture of integrated circuits (ICs) and other semiconductor products. These mainly include coating systems for chemical (CVD) and physical vapor deposition (PVD), especially HDP- CVD and PECVD systems, as well as electroplating (ECD). The company was thus in direct competition with other equipment manufacturers such as Applied Materials and Lam Research .

In addition to semiconductor products, the company also included the Industrial Application Group, which deals with machine tool construction and to which the German company Peter Wolters GmbH belonged. In 2014 Peter Wolters GmbH was sold to the Lapmaster Group. In 2012 “Novellus Systems” was taken over by Lam Research.
