Contents of the songs
Most of the songs are about love, longing or loneliness.
- Transfusion Blues thematizes the life of a man who, under the influence of drugs, shoots his wife one morning and spent 99 years behind bars. Cash recorded the song a little faster and later with slightly different lyrics under the name Cocaine Blues for At Folsom Prison , whereby the prisoners showed clear reactions to the violence described. The song ends with the advice to stay away from whiskey and drugs.
- Why Do You Punish Me (For Lovin 'You) is a man's accusation against his mistress for treating him badly. The song was originally a hit for Hank Snow .
- I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry is a story by Hank Williams about a man who spends a lonely night.
- I Couldn't Keep from Crying by Marty Robbins describes the situation of a man who watches his ex-wife with her new lover and cannot hold back tears.
