Now, There Was a Song! is the ninth studio album by the American country singer Johnny Cash . It was produced by Don Law and Frank Jones and released on Columbia Records in December 1960 .

The album was recorded on February 17, 1960 in a three-hour session and, as Cash's first work, does not contain any original compositions. It is a collection of country standards and hits that were current at the time. Cash sings songs by Marty Robbins , George Jones , Kenny Rogers , Hank Snow , Ernest Tubb and Hank Williams , among others .

Contents of the songs

Most of the songs are about love, longing or loneliness.

  • Transfusion Blues thematizes the life of a man who, under the influence of drugs, shoots his wife one morning and spent 99 years behind bars. Cash recorded the song a little faster and later with slightly different lyrics under the name Cocaine Blues for At Folsom Prison , whereby the prisoners showed clear reactions to the violence described. The song ends with the advice to stay away from whiskey and drugs.
  • Why Do You Punish Me (For Lovin 'You) is a man's accusation against his mistress for treating him badly. The song was originally a hit for Hank Snow .
  • I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry is a story by Hank Williams about a man who spends a lonely night.
  • I Couldn't Keep from Crying by Marty Robbins describes the situation of a man who watches his ex-wife with her new lover and cannot hold back tears.
