Nowoheorhijiwsk ( Ukrainian Новогеоргіївськ , Russian Новогеоргиевск Nowogeorgijewsk until 1795 and from 1821 to 1860 Krylov , 1795-1821 Aleksandrija ; Russian Новогеоргиевск ) was a city in the Oblast Kirovohrad , Ukraine , near the town Chihirin . Today it lies at the bottom of the Kremenchuk reservoir .

Location of the place

Novoheorhijiwsk emerged at the beginning of the 17th century as a settlement near the fortress of the same name at the confluence of the Tyasmyn into the Dnieper . In 1795 the place was elevated to a city and received the new name Aleksandrija ( Александрия ). In 1821 it was renamed Krylov ( Крылов ) and in 1860 the place got its original name back.

The city was 15 km west of Kremenchuk and had 2764 inhabitants in 1850. As a result, the population grew rapidly, so that in 1885 there were already 7,893 and in 1897 11,594 inhabitants. At that time, the city was mostly inhabited by Jews, who made up 57.1% of the population in 1897, followed by Ukrainians (29.1%), Russians (12.2%), Poles (0.7%) and Germans (0.2 %).

At the end of the 1950s, the population of Novoheorhijiwsk was evacuated, with the vast majority moving to the newly founded city of Switlovodsk . In the course of the damming of the Dnepr to the Kremenchuk reservoir, which began in 1962, the city was flooded.
