The Nubra-Pfeifhase ( Ochotona nubrica ) is a species of mammal from the family of the Pfeifhasen within the hare-like . Their distribution area is limited to the highlands of Tibet and the Indian union territory of Ladakh .

features

The Nubra Pfeifhase is a medium-sized Pfeifhase with a body length of 14 to 18.4 centimeters. In its sandy-brown color it resembles Ochotona roylei and Ochotona thibetana as well as other related species and can only be reliably distinguished from them on the basis of features of the skull. Compared to Ochotona thibetana , it is slightly lighter in color, with the animals from the Kashmir region having the lightest color.

distribution

Distribution area of Ochotona nubrica

The distribution area of the Nubra-Pfeifhasen is in the area of the Himalaya . The species lives in the highlands of Tibet in the Xizang province ( Tibet Autonomous Region ), in northern Nepal and in Ladakh in India . It occurs at altitudes of 3000 to 4500 meters.

Way of life

The habitat of the nubra pika is characterized by the scrubland of the desert region and the steppe of the high mountains. Little information is available about the way of life of this pika. It lives similarly to other whistle hares in China and feeds on plants in a generalist way. The animals probably build residential structures in the ground. It is territorial and forms family groups.

Systematics

The Nubra-Pfeifhase was assigned as an independent species to the Pfeifhasen (genus Ochotona ) and the subgenus Ochotona . With the nominate form Ochotona nubrica nubrica and Ochotona nubrica lhasaensis two subspecies are described.

The first scientific description was made by the zoologist Oldfield Thomas in 1922. The pigeon hare was at times considered a subspecies of Ochotona pusilla , Ochotona roylei and Ochotona thibetana , but was in 1990 by Smith et al. and described in 1992 by Yu and Zheng as a separate species based on morphological data. The closest relatives are Ochotona thibetana or Ochotona curzoniae , depending on the source .

Hazard and protection

The species is classified as not endangered (least concern) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) due to its very large distribution area and the comparatively large population. A decline in the populations is not known.
