Nuclear Valdez is an American rock band from Miami , Florida .
All members of the band are ( Hispanics ) and were born outside of the US. Diaz, Barcal and LeMont are of Cuban origin.
history
The rock band was formed in 1985 in Miami, Florida by singer and guitarist Froilan Sossa and bassist Juan Diaz. They had a few small gigs and were more underground when they met guitarist Jorge Barcala and drummer Robert Slade LeMont and completed the line-up . The name of the band refers to a colleague of Diaz who had an "explosive" disposition.
In the late 1980s, the band signed a record deal with Epic Records and released their first album called I Am I in July 1989. "I Am I's" political lyrics quickly put the band in touch with socially engaged rock bands like The Alarm , with whom they soon performed together. This happened, for example, on a very early episode of MTV Unplugged .
The album's lead single, "Summer", which deals with the Cuban Revolution (1953-1959), was often played on MTV but did not reach the charts. Their 1991 follow-up album Dream Another Dream was much more complicated in structure and mainly dealt with the Latin roots of the band members. This change of style was not particularly well received by American fans, so Nuclear Valdez decided to take an extended break, during which they let the band rest.
In the late 1990s they started working together again and writing new songs. In 2000 Dan Ceratelli took over the position of Jorge Barcala as guitarist and they recorded the new pieces, which were then released in 2002 on the indie label One Way Records as In a Minute All Could Change.
Trivia
- The song "Dance Where the Bullets Fly" from the second album Dream Another Dream was used for a season finale by Melrose Place .
