features

The housings, which have the same flaps, are broad to narrowly triangular or transversely ovoid, usually more or less strongly extended beak-like towards the rear. They are up to 10 centimeters long. The ligament is z. T. shifted inwards. The angled or curved edge of the lock is separated into an anterior and posterior part by ligaments and vertebrae . On the lock plate sit numerous similar teeth that z. T. are angled. The surface is provided with more or less strong growth lines or strips. A jacket bay is available because the animals have siphons. The mouth flap buttons are relatively long. The shell is aragonitic with a homogeneous or cross-lamellar microstructure.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The Nuculanidae family is found worldwide. The species occur from shallow water to greater depths.

Taxonomy

The taxon was established in 1854 by John Edward Gray as Ledadae. However, the name received no attention in the literature. The name Nuculanidae was established in 1858 by the brothers Henry and Arthur Adams . The following compilation follows the MolluscaBase .

The MolluscaBase currently lists over 230 species in the Nuculanidae family.
