The Nuculanoidea are a superfamily of mussels and the only superfamily of the order Nuculanida in the subclass of the Protobranchia . In the older literature, the taxon is mostly treated as a superfamily of the order Nuculida ; In the more recent literature, the status of a superfamily has now established itself in its own order. The oldest representatives come from the Ordovician.

features

The housings, which have the same flaps, are small to medium-sized (usually up to several centimeters long). They are usually more or less clearly extended to the rear, e.g. Sometimes the rear end is even drawn out into a rostrum or is also pointed. The vertebrae, which are rolled up perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the case (orthogyr) or rolled backwards (opisthogyr), are located approximately in the middle to well in front of the midline. The ligament can be internal, external, or internal and external, and in front of and behind the vertebrae. The area is usually long and lanceolate. The lock edge is curved, the lock is taxodont, and has numerous, quite uniform serrations perpendicular to the lock edge. The sphincters are about the same size. The surface line is usually indented.

The shell consists of aragonitic , homogeneous layers or layers with crossed lamellas, some (fossil) species also with an inner mother-of-pearl layer. Elements parallel to the edge dominate the ornamentation.

The mouth is surrounded by mouth flaps that z. Sometimes even sit on a kind of snout. There are siphons at the rear .

Geographical distribution and habitat

The representatives of the order Nuculanida or the superfamily Nuculanoidea are common worldwide. They mostly live in deeper water on soft soils.

Taxonomy

The order Nuculanida was only established in 2000 by Joseph Carter, Campbell & Campbell, 2000. The following compilation follows the MolluscaBase.
