Nueva Ciudad Guerrero was founded in 1750 under the name Villa del Señor San Ignacio de Loyola de Revilla , but later renamed after the second Mexican President Vicente Guerrero. In 1840 the place served for a short time as the capital of the briefly established Republic of the Rio Grande , which was never officially recognized.
