Nukta

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nukta ( Hindi नुक़्ता nuqtā , from Arabic نقطة nuqta , DMG nuqṭa  'point') is a diacritical mark in the Indian scriptures . In terms of appearance, the nukta is a point in most Indian scripts that is positioned below the consonant.

The nukta is used in the Indian scripts to expand the alphabet by additional characters, similar to the diacritical marks of the Latin writing system . These characters can either be relevant for a certain language or used to write foreign words (mostly from Urdu or English ). Characters with Nukta are treated separately in the ISO 15919 translation.
