Nuno José Cardoso da Silva Piçarra

Nuno José Cardoso da Silva Piçarra (born April 27, 1957 in Sintra ) is a Portuguese lawyer and judge at the European Court of Justice .

Live and act

Piçarra studied law at the University of Lisbon until he graduated in 1980 . He then worked there as a research assistant, where he obtained a Master of Laws title in 1986 . He then worked in various court positions. In 1990 he became a legal clerk at the Court of First Instance. In this position he worked until 1996 and then moved to the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs as coordinator for matters relating to freedom of movement in Europe . From 1996 to 1999 he was the Portuguese representative on the K4 committee. In 1999 Piçarra returned to his academic career and became a research assistant at the New University of Lisbon . There he was awarded a Dr. iur. doctorate and subsequently worked there as an assistant professor. In addition, he was a member of various transnational networks initiated by the European Union to research the free movement of workers and immigration in Europe. From 2015 to 2018 he was a member of the Board of Directors of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights . Piçarra has been a judge at the European Court of Justice since October 8, 2018 .
