François Harlay de Champvallon

François Harlay de Champvallon (also: François III. De Harlay ) (born August 14, 1625 in Paris , † August 6, 1695 in Charenton-le-Pont ) was a French nobleman, Roman Catholic archbishop, commendatarian abbot and member of the Académie française . He should not be confused with his uncle François II. De Harlay (1585–1653).

life and work

François de Harlay, whose family came from Champvallon , became Commendatarabbot of Jumièges Abbey in 1648 and succeeded his uncle of the same name as Archbishop of Rouen in 1651 . In 1671 he moved to the seat of the Archbishop of Paris . In the same year he was elected to the Académie française (seat No. 28). In 1673 he refused to bury Molière in church and only gave in at the urging of the king. In 1683 he married Louis XIV and Madame de Maintenon in a secret marriage. In 1685 he encouraged the king to repeal the Edict of Nantes ( Edict of Fontainebleau ).

As the first Archbishop of Paris he achieved the connection of his office with the appointment as Duke and Pair de France , which at the same time the membership in the royal order of the Order of Michael and Order of the Holy Spirit was connected. He left behind only official writings, not literary ones, but was famous for his extraordinary talent for speaking. He died of a stroke at the age of 69 in the Château de Conflans in Charenton-le-Pont. His episcopal motto was: "Nullius Harlaio necessitas" (Nothing is necessary for a Harlay).
