Gaius Nymphidius Sabinus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gaius Nymphidius Sabinus († 68 ) was a Roman Praetorian prefect of the 1st century AD.

Life

Nymphidius Sabinus was the son of the freed man Nymphidia. While he later passed himself off as the illegitimate son of Emperor Caligula , Plutarch reports the rumor that he was the son of a gladiator named Martianus. Under Emperor Claudius he was prefect of an auxiliary force unit. He became Praetorian Prefect in 65 . After the discovery of the Gaius Calpurnius Piso ( Pisonian Conspiracy ) conspiracy , Emperor Nero gave him the consular insignia. During Nero's stay in Greece (67/68) he led the government together with Tigellinus , who had been Praetorian prefect since 62.

As Nero's downfall loomed, Nymphidius Sabinus betrayed both the emperor and Tigellinus. He tried to ally himself with Galba by securing the support of the Praetorians . He promised the soldiers a high donative in the name of Galba . When Galba did not respond, Nymphidius Sabinus supposedly wanted to proclaim himself emperor. For this purpose he had the consul-designate Cingonius Varro prepare a speech. At the instigation of the military tribune Antonius Honoratus, he was killed for this.
