Politics and world events
- Silius Italicus becomes ordinary consul of the Roman Empire .
- Spring: Gaius Iulius Vindex , governor of the province of Gallia Lugdunensis , rises against the Roman emperor Nero . Several legions join him, but he does not strive for the purple himself, but wants to win Galba , the governor of Hispania Tarraconensis, for this task. The two are also supported by Otho , the governor of Lusitania .
- April 3 : Galba is proclaimed Roman emperor .
- May: Lucius Verginius Rufus , governor of Germania superior , defeats Gaius Iulius Vindex in the battle of Vesontio , Vindex commits suicide.
- Early June: The Roman Senate declares Nero an enemy of the state and confirms Galba's elevation to emperor, who is then also recognized by Rufus. Galba goes to Rome on June 8th .
- June 9th : The 30-year-old Emperor Nero stabs himself outside Rome with the help of a slave. On his flight to Egypt , the persecutors came very close to his stay. The Julian-Claudian dynasty ends with Nero's suicide . A civil war over the succession breaks out.
