Nyrki Tapiovaara (born September 16, 1911 in Hämeenlinna , † February 29, 1940 in Tohmajärvi ) was a Finnish film director.

Life

Tapiovaara was born into a family of civil servants in southern Finland. He was influenced by the literary movement Tulenkantajat and represented culturally radical views. Tapiovaara worked as a theater director and wrote film reviews. In 1937 he made his first own film. This was followed by four more films, in which he broke with the film habits of the time and dealt with classics of Finnish literature. He died in 1940 during the Winter War .
