Oskar Berndt Scholz or O. Berndt Scholz (born July 13, 1941 in Freiberg ) is a German psychologist and psychotherapist .

Life

Scholz studied psychology at the Berlin Humboldt University with the minor subjects medicine, mathematics and biology. He worked as a research assistant at the universities of Leipzig, Berlin and Tübingen. In 1976 he received his first appointment to a professorship for psychology at the University of Düsseldorf . From 1983 until his retirement he held the chair for clinical and applied psychology at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . As director at the Institute for Psychology there, he was responsible in particular for the subjects of legal psychology and biopsychology . Several stays as a visiting professor have taken him to Japan, Taiwan, Brazil and Russia.

Researches

Scholz carried out basic clinical and psychological research in various areas: cooperation between couples, the measurement of chronic pain, behavioral medicine for sleep disorders , dermatological and rheumatic diseases. His forensic psychological investigations relate to the credibility of witness statements , to falsification of memories and their manipulation as well as to questions of guilt reduction. He made particular merits in hypnosis research , which he put on a rational basis by demonstrating the effectiveness of hypnotherapeutic procedures through empirical-experimental investigations and in this way countering esoteric assumptions and convictions.

Others

Scholz took over the scientific leadership of the 3rd Congress of the Society for Behavioral Medicine in Bonn, which was of political importance insofar as it was the first scientific meeting of behavioral doctors after the so-called Wende (Russian, Greek and American colleagues were among the participants).

Scholz is also active in fiction under a pseudonym. Two novels and a volume of short stories have been published by him.
