Austrian Research Foundation for International Development

The Austrian Research Foundation for International Development - ÖFSE is an Austrian research and information institution that deals with issues relating to developing countries, development cooperation and development policy. It was founded in 1967 in the legal form of a foundation under public law. The founders - the Austrian Academic Exchange Service and the Afro-Asian Institute Vienna - pursued the goal of establishing an information, documentation and research center on issues of development policy and development cooperation. After the founding organizations had withdrawn in the 1990s, the foundation statutes were renewed in 2007. The foundation bodies are a board of trustees , the management and the scientific management. The organizational chart provides a current overview of the ÖFSE's organization.

In 2016, the organization presented its new strategy concept. It was drawn up by the Board of Trustees and the ÖFSE management with the involvement of ÖFSE employees. In the coming years, ÖFSE will orient its mandate and its services to this new strategic concept.

C3 library for development policy

Since 2009, ÖFSE, together with BAOBAB and Frauen * solidarität, has been running the C3 library for development policy , the largest scientific and educational specialist library on international development, women / gender and global learning in Austria.

Research at the ÖFSE is interdisciplinary and application-oriented. The ÖFSE offers information, analyzes and advice on the main topics:

  • International development policy and development cooperation
  • Public and private development policy and cooperation in Austria
  • International economy and development economics
  • Development education research

The library includes a range of media and information on the following topics:

  • international and Austrian development policy and development cooperation
  • current developments in the countries of the Global South
  • Issues relevant to development and socio-political issues such as globalization, migration, climate and environment, international trade and investment policy, education, labor and human rights
  • Global learning
  • international feminist theories, international women's and LGBTI movements
  • Special collection Latin America with a focus on the economy, politics, history, society and ecology of Latin American countries
  • Missio special collection focusing on theology and development

The library is open to the public and use on site is free of charge. Most of the media can be borrowed with a loan card.

research

The research activities of the ÖFSE include the preparation of studies, analyzes and basic papers, as well as policy and strategy advice for public and private actors in Austrian and international development policy and cooperation. The design of discursive reflection and learning processes on current issues in international development policy is another important pillar of the area of ​​responsibility.

The association sees itself as a scientific competence center for development policy and economics, which works on the basis of well-founded specialist knowledge and the international networking of its employees as well as with reference to the practice of Austrian and international actors in development policy and development cooperation, making policy-relevant contributions. Due to the knowledge of the international discussion, the ÖFSE brings interesting and current topics "to Austria".

The organization works along defined thematic focal points. These are:

  • World economy and development
  • Development policy and development cooperation
  • Education and development

The results of the work are published in the various ÖFSE publication formats, especially the ÖFSE Working Papers, ÖFSE Briefing Papers and the ÖFSE Policy Notes.

Lecture, advisory and query answering activities make the knowledge gathered in the ÖFSE available to the interested public.

Publications

  • Austrian Development Policy - Reports. Analyzes. Information  : In the annual publication, the ÖFSE presents Austria's overall financial performance and presents analyzes of selected data and facts from Austrian public and private development cooperation. Furthermore, a current topic of development policy is processed and prepared for the political discussion in Austria.
  • Working Papers: Working Papers are created on the current focal points of the Science & Research area and are intended to process and present the content of the current international discussion. They aim to create a sound basis for further processing of the topic and to stimulate a public discussion process in Austria.
  • Briefing papers are written on the current focal points of the science & research area and summarize and analyze the current international discussion on the respective topic. They build on working papers on the respective topic. The briefing papers focus on current events that give rise to brief but well-founded assessments and analyzes.
  • Policy Notes : ÖFSE policy notes are short papers on current topics with a brief analysis and focus on development policy recommendations. Alternatively, they serve to concisely present the results of more extensive ÖFSE studies.
  • ÖFSE-Edition : The series ÖFSE-Edition has been publishing studies by Austrian scientists, results of meetings and conferences on current development issues since 1992. The series also publishes scientific articles on current development policy. Topics are included that bring different perspectives to the further development of development cooperation and the discussion on development policy.
  • ÖFSE Forum : This series has been publishing diploma theses, dissertations and research reports relating to development cooperation since 1996. The ÖFSE FORUM sees itself as a publication opportunity for young scientists and serves to publish excellent scientific research results on questions of international development and development policy. Submission deadlines are March 15th and October 15th.
