Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series) has so far only been a standard in Great Britain and Poland, but is already used in many countries as a certification basis for management systems for occupational safety (AMS).

The structure of OHSAS 18001 is closely based on the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards . The standard is therefore suitable for use as part of an integrated management system .

BS OHSAS 18001 is based on the English standard BS 8800: 1996. There is an ongoing discussion as to whether this standard should be adopted as an internationally valid standard. The ISO 45001 standard is in progress as a possible successor to BS OHSAS 18001.

In fact, many companies are already under pressure from their customers to be certified according to OHSAS 18001 (often together with ISO 14001 for environmental management and ISO 50001 for energy management), even though the standard is not an international standard. This enables these customers to formally prove that their suppliers are socially responsible companies .

The standard has its own section on “Co-determination and advice”. In Germany, employee representatives who need suitable further training also take part in the certification audits. With regard to the participation of employee representatives in audits, the confidentiality of the audit must be subordinate to the information and co-determination rights of the employee representatives.

Certification

In Germany, companies can have their occupational safety management system certified by the German accreditation body in accordance with OHSAS 18001.

The extensive certification scheme for OHSAS 18001 of the Dutch SCCM is available in English. The scheme of the Stichting Coördinatie Certificatie Milieu (this is a foundation for the coordination of the certification of environmental management systems) is a detailed description of the procedure for a certification audit for OHSAS 18001. It also contains a sample letter with which employee representatives are to be informed in good time about upcoming audits. You can then also give information to the employer and / or the certification company before the audit and thus have a say in the topics of the audit.

literature

OHSAS 18002 provides a good introduction to the OHSAS 18001 standard. The book contains “Guidelines for Implementing OHSAS 18001” and the full text of OHSAS 18001. Companies that have bought OHSAS 18002 do not need to buy OHSAS 18001 as well .
